Off the Rocks Rescue is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) animal welfare organization dedicated to the aid of homeless cats and dogs by providing education and advocacy as well as hands on rescue. Based in St. Thomas, USVI and Boston, Massachusetts, we bring adoptive cats and dogs from areas of high population and facilitate their adoption into loving homes in New England. As a volunteer organization, we rely entirely on support and funds from individuals, businesses and foundations.
Tales and Happenings
Myda, also known as Muppet, had been living on the streets of Bovoni, St. Thomas for quite some time, often seen begging for food from a restaurant nearby. She was finally rescued by the Off the Rocks STT team along with her three pups she had been keeping under a 40' container. The puppies: Moose, Grizzly, and Penelope all found wonderful homes in M.A. and Myda was lucky enough to find her forever home with our board member MacKenzie Miller. Myda has just finished up her heartworm treatment in St. Croix where they now live and is loving life being a spoiled pup!
Rescuers from the Animal Care Center of St. John (ACC) found Potter's mother wandering the streets of St. John when she was days from giving birth. They gave her a comfortable place to have her litter at ACC, where her kitens were lovingly bottlefed. Potter, the runt, was severely underweight and was a mere 7oz when he arrived at OTR/Wellesley at 8 weeks old. The vets warned us that he might not survive. But luckily, thanks to our generous donors, we were able to provide Potter with the care and resources he needed and find him forever home. He now lives happily with a loving family.
Too often in the USVI, kittens are found abandoned and sick on the streets. Stevie and Marvin were found at about 6 weeks of age, frozen with fear, starving and sick, in the middle of a road on St. Thomas. A Good Samaritan picked them up and brought them to the local veterinary clinic: Canine Cats and Critters. These two inseparable kittens were both very sick with upper respiratory infections (URIs) - a common issue in the stressed and poorly nourished stray cat population. In addition to congestion, a URI also causes eye inflammation and can lead to blindness in some cases. Stevie's eyes were so inflamed that they were both glued shut. After just a few days of care of intensive care with OTR founder Kelsey Wyrick, Stevie was able to open his eyes a bit, and after two weeks of continued care, both kittens were on the mend. Under Kelsey's care, they went from super sick street kittens to the biggest lovers at OTR/St. Thomas! Stevie and Marvin came up to Off the Rocks/MA, settled in, and were quickly adopted by an experienced pet owner who absolutely adores them!
After Hurricane Irma, a relief lineman was working outdoors on St. Thomas and witnessed this sweet coconut retriever being mistreated in a junkyard. Luckily, the lineman and his wife were able to remove the dog from this awful situation. They brought her to Canines, Cats, and Critters, the on-island veterinary clinic, in order to have her spayed and get a complete medical check-up. There, the veterinarian delivered a piece of bad news that is all too typical in the USVI: Molly had heartworm disease and would need to be treated for months. The couple, who were already bonded to Molly, asked Off the Rocks founder and Canines, Cats, and Critters vet tech Kelsey Wyrick to find a foster home for this sweet dog. Kelsey went above and beyond: in addition to first placing Molly with Off the Rocks board member Shermon Smith and then with wonderful dog foster mom Caitee McGrath, she raised money to pay for all of Molly's treatments. After four months, Molly was healthy enough to be transported to Stray Rescue of St. Louis, one of our partner rescues, where she quickly found a loving forever home. We are deeply grateful to our generous donors who helped us to pay for Molly's expensive heartworm treatments and transportation to St. Louis.
